Z L O E ======= The Objective: Kill the enemy. To install: tar zxvf zloe-0.x.tar.gz cd zloe-0.x make su root make install Usage: ZLOE is a two-player game. To play it, you will need another person with the game installed. One player waits for connections, and the other connects to the former. Player 1: $ zloe -s Player 2: $ zloe player1.com If no network connection or partner is currently at your disposal, you can play Zlobot, the ZLOE robot player. Zlobot comes in 3 difficulty levels. To play against the "hard" Zlobot, for example, you would do $ zloe -rh And that should be it. Navigation: You navigate around the playing field using the mouse. The position of the mouse relative to the centre of the window determines the course and speed. You fire by clicking the left mouse key. You drop bombs by clicking the right mouse key, and clicking it again to detonate the bomb. Strategy: There are several details in the game which make it possible to employ clever tactics. Some points of interest are: - The Border Outside the playing field (marked by a rectangular line drawn in the background), weapons do not work. Players can't fire weapons here, and weapons from the playing area can't penetrate into here. This provides a haven to escape to and regroup if badly under fire. - Weapon Energy Each weapon (missile) has a set amount of energy when fired. As time goes on, the weapon gradually loses this energy, until it vanishes. When hit by a missile, the energy you lose from the hit is proportional to the amount of energy left in the missile. Thus, it is much worse to get hit point-blanc than with a dying missile. Also, a weapon is not activated right when you fire it. There is a brief delay. This protects you from slamming into it right after firing, to an extent, but also protects your enemy. For example, if you fire on your enemy (or the other way around) when right on top of him/her, the weapons will be ineffective. So by staying on top of your enemy, or very very close to him, you can prevent him from shooting you. - Weapon Limit Each player is only allowed up to a certain number of missiles in action at one time. Once you have maxed this out, you cannot fire anymore until some missiles die out (or hit the border or one of the players). So, you should economize your use of long, massive bursts. - Bombs Bombs can provide a neat way of striking your enemy. A good tactic can be to make you enemy chase you to a border, and drop a bomb right before you cross it. This leaves you safe from the blast, and the enemy (hopefully) exposed.
