Announcing the release of Xquote 2.0. This release contains enhancements
that allow separate servers for each ticker symbol, improvements to parsing
of penny stocks, and improvements to the popup menus.

What is Xquote?
----------------
Xquote is a WWW ticker symbol quote retrieval program for UNIX systems
using the X Window System. Xquote requires Motif 1.2 or later and XPM.
Xquote is tested on the following platforms: HPUX 10, Solaris 2.6 CDE, and
Linux 2.2.12.
Xquote retrieves quotes from a number of net sources. It takes a ticker
symbol (stock, mutual fund, currency) and displays info in a table or ticker
tape. The table data displayed is selectable, and includes price, date,
change, volume, yield, 52 week high/low, day high/low, P/E, dividend, full
name, basically whatever can be reliably retrieved from multiple sources.
The good part Xquote communicates this information to Xinvest automatically
(if its running).
New servers can be added without rebuilding, just update X resources and the
new server or format is supported.
Xquote supports X11R5 (CDE 1.x) and X11R6 session management. Xquote will
start off just as you left it! Now with manual session management, you no
longer need a session manager to save your ticker symbols and other setup.
Hopefully, all of this is displayed using an easy-to-use, point-and-click
interface. There are few command line switches, no dot files, and X resources
are limited to color and font selection allowing you to tailor the look of the
tool to your own preferences.

Building Xquote
----------------
Xquote is tested on the following platforms: HPUX 10, Solaris 2.6 CDE, and
Linux 2.2.12.
Known difficulties by machine/OS.
---------------------------------
1. Unixware users should use gcc if possible. Unixware 2.1 users can use
the native compiler. You may also wish to define NEED_STRCASECMP in the
Imakefile or Makefile.distrib or link against libucb (-lucb).
2. SunOS 4.x
a. Use Sun's acc, GNU gcc, or another ANSI compliant compiler.
b. Define NEED_STRERROR in Makefile.distrib or Imakefile.
3. Solaris
a. Add -lsocket and -lnsl to LIBS in Makefile.distrib and/or SYS_LIBS in
Imakefile.
4. SGI IRIX
a. IRIX 5.3 users should know xpm.h is missing from the standard
distribution, though libXpm is present. Motif includes are installed in
/usr/include/abi.
b. Xquote Motif 2.0 resources generate a warning:
"Warning: CvtStringToSlidingMode: Unknown string".
This is safe to ignore or remove "ProgessBar.slidingMode: SLIDER"
from resCommon.h and Xquote.ad before building.
5. HPUX users note that Xmu and Xaw (not required) are not in the standard
distribution, but are available from HP in unsupported patches.

Patches can be fetched from http://us.external.hp.com.
Without Xmu, Xquote can not pass price data to Xinvest. If this is not
important to you then define NO_XMU (in Imakefile or Makefile.distrib)
and this code will not be built.
To build Xquote.
-----------------
0. Go to the Xquote home page (http://sunsite.auc.dk/xinvest/) to find a
source archive.
1. Download and uncompress the source archive. There are two ways to uncompress
the archive:
a. If you have GNU tar: "tar -xvzf xquote-VERSION.tar.gz"
or
b. "gunzip < xquote-VERSION.tar.gz | tar -xvf -"
Xquote will create it's own subdirectory named 'xquote-VERSION'. Note that
'VERSION' will be a number, such as 2.3.
2. cd to xquote-VERSION.
If you have imake.
3. Look over the Imakefile provided.
a. If you have XPM or Motif in non-standard places add the include
directories where the headers are found to INCLUDES.
b. Add the full path name of the XPM and Motif libraries to SYS_LIBRARIES.
c. If you want a transparent icon add -DSHAPE to DEFINES.
4. xmkmf; make Makefile; make depend; make; make install. You may need to
be root to do the installation.
If you don't have imake.
3. Copy Makefile.distrib to Makefile. Look over the provided Makefile. You're
kind of on your own here.
a. Set CFLAGS, INCLUDES, LIBS, and LIBDIR and the build should go well.
b. Add -DSHAPE to CFLAGS if you want a transparent icon. This will require
linking against libXext (already in LIBS in the Makefile).
4. Type make. Copy Xquote to your bin area (usually /usr/bin/X11).
To test Xquote.
----------------
1. Select a server from the Option->Network dialog. Configure a proxy server
if you have one.
2. Add ticker symbols from the Option->Ticker dialog. Here's one to start you
off, TXN (Texas Instruments).
3. Select File->Update Now.
4. Start up Xinvest and see how much fun it is not to update prices by hand.
(Xinvest must be running at the end of the quote download and must have
at least some of the ticker symbols Xquote downloads).
